Reach Out and Read-South Carolina held its fourth annual Read and Romp Family Benefit Event on Sunday, October 19th at the South Carolina State Museum. The event was a fun time for children and families to come together and spend the afternoon traveling through the adventures of their favorite children’s books. The afternoon was a great success, and brought families together to enjoy books and celebrate literacy. Nearly 300 children participated in the event, and proceeds raised more than $15,000 to support the ROR program in South Carolina. All proceeds will be used to purchase books for our programs throughout the state.
True to the mission of Reach Out and Read, the Read and Romp event demonstrated to families the fun and enjoyment that books bring. At Read and Romp, children were engaged in fun, learning-based activities themed around favorite children’s books. In addition to the 12 interactive story book stations there was a sketch artist, face painting, guest book characters, cotton candy, and much, much more! Story book booths carried children through the adventures of Curious George, Maisey the Mouse, Berenstain Bears, and many more favorites.
Children were able to visit with their favorite characters such as Cocky, Clifford, and Richie the Raccoon. The event owes it success to wonderful champions of the Reach Out and Read-SC program as well as to the many volunteers and sponsors who made this event possible.
There were more than 95 volunteers involved at the event, and their help and commitment made the event possible. Children and parents had a wonderful time and we look forward to our fifth annual event in 2009.
